the x window system
The X Window System is:
A multi-vendor standard;
Implemented in many different ways, but compatibly (e.g. Linux apps can run on Solaris X servers);
Extensible and flexible (to wit, XFree86 is entirely different from Windows/commercial UNIX X servers);
the
way to do graphical displays on UNIX.
