The growth of LUV to a group with over 1000 members means that a small committee can no longer provide a sufficient range of services and activities to meet the needs of all LUV members. In order to expand LUV in new directions and attempt to fill the widening gap between what we'd like to provide and what we can provide, we encourage those of you with a particular Linux-related interest or in a particular geographic area to get together and form your own LUV Special Interest Group (SIG).
A few of these groups have started to spring up on their own recently, and we'd like to do everything we can to make things easier for the SIG organisers. We'd also like to keep these groups loosely under the LUV banner in order to reach as many Linux users as possible and avoid fragmenting the Victorian Linux community.
Since LUV doesn't have much money we can't offer to fund SIGs, but we're more than happy to put announcements on the LUV web site for them and/or host web pages with SIG information at the LUV website. We can also host SIG mailing lists at luv.asn.au, and if there's anything else you think we can do to help don't hesitate to ask.
In return we ask two things from SIG organisers. Firstly, that you be happy to accept any LUV members who are interested (we want any LUV events to be accessible to everyone), and secondly that you keep the committee informed about how things are going and what's happening. This helps us answer people's questions, resolve problems and also allows us to discover common needs and provide solutions.
If you're interested in starting a SIG, contact the LUV committee and we'll be glad to help.
