Fundamental logical unit of storage.
If a block is pointed to by an Inode this indicates the block belongs to a file.
If a block is on the free lists it is able to be allocated.
As stated earlier a block is a unit of storage on the physical partition. The Super Block defines how large the block size will be. This why the super block is located 1024 bytes offset into the partition. So that kernel can always find the super block to figure out how to find the other structures on the partition.
